Ottawa Homeland Initiative
The Ottawa Homeland Initiative was launched during the 15th year celebration of Isokan Yoruba of Ottawa on December 10, 2016. The overarching goal of this initiative is to increase the visibility, relevance and socio-politico influence for the Association in the community. There is also an implicit educational purpose to increase community awareness of who we are and why the Yorubas are so special.
To advance this initiative, our association plans to focus on 4 key areas:
- Immigrant health (including high blood pressure and drug abuse issues)
- Chronic diseases (such as, heart disease, stroke, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, and cancer)
- Children health (support for CHEO)
- Shelter and homelessness (including food banks, and shelter for women and youths)
Our approach is predicated on:
- Identifying areas of needs where we can make a difference;
- Identifying and partnering with organizations with similar interests; and
- Engaging or enabling community actions in areas of interest
